The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled Nikolai Kulemin from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

To make room on the roster the Maple Leafs have placed Phil Kessel (shoulder surgery) on the long-term injured list. The team could not make the move until Thursday.

Kessel is expected to be ready to return in November.

The Maple Leafs open the regular season Thursday night against the Montreal Canadiens.
