NEW YORK -- Washington Capitals left-winger Alex Ovechkin was named first star of the week Monday after opening the NHL regular season with a pair of three-point games.

The reigning league MVP had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday. Ovechkin added a goal and two assists in a 6-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

He finished the week with a plus-4 rating.

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Craig Anderson was named second star and St. Louis Blues centre Keith Tkachuk took the third star.

Anderson posted a 2-0-0 record last week with a 1.00 goals-against average, .973 save percentage and one shutout.

Tkachuk opened the season by recording four points (two goals, two assists) in the Blues' two-game sweep over the Detroit Red Wings in Stockholm, Sweden.
