Phil Kessel received a bit of a scare almost immediately in his Toronto Maple Leafs' debut.

With just six minutes remaining in the first period, Kessel was laid out by Tampa Bay Lightning defender Mattias Ohlund after Kessel skated over the blue line with his head down.  A small scrum ensued as Kessel appeared dazed on the ice.

Kessel seemed a little groggy as he left the ice and headed immediately to the Leafs' dressing room.

He re-emerged moments late sporting a cut on his lip but appeared otherwise fine.  He did not miss a shift.

The Madison, Wisconsin native had yet to suit up for the Leafs this season after being acquired from the Bruins in a much publicized trade.  The 22-year old underwent off-season shoulder surgery after scoring 36 goals for the Bruins.

The Maple Leafs are hoping he can help jumpstart an anemic offence that has scored only 30 goals this season heading into action on Tuesday night.
