Vancouver Canucks forward Darcy Hordichuk has been suspended automatically for one game and will miss tonight's contest against the Detroit Red Wings.
Head coach Alain Vigneault was also fined $10,000 by the league.
The NHL's disciplinary action resulted from Tuesday's 6-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues where Hordichuk was assessed an instigator penalty after fighting Cam Janssen at 15:04 of the third period.
League rules states that "a player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes of regulation time or at anytime in overtime, shall automatically be suspended for one game''
In addition, ''the coach shall be fined $10,000 - a fine that will double for each subsequent incident.''
Hordichuk forfeits $4,015.54 in salary, which goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. Vigneault's fine goes to the NHL Foundation.
