The Edmonton Oilers are awaiting word on the severity of a shoulder injury to Ales Hemsky, but expect to be without the Czech-born sniper for some time.
Hemsky underwent an MRI on Thursday, however head coach Pat Quinn told reporters that the team had not yet received the results.
"We haven't had any report," Quinn told the Edmonton Sun. "He's not expected to be available for a little bit anyway."
The 26-year old suffered the injury during the second period of the Oliers loss to the Kings on Wednesday when he was drilled into the boards by Michal Handzus. He left the ice and did not return.
"We don't know what's going on with him right now," Andrew Cogliano told the Edmonton Sun. "You lose him and it hurts the team because he's our best player, This gives guys like myself opportunities, but he's our top player and we want him back playing."
Hemsky is consulting with a doctor as rumours continue to swirl that he may need surgery to repair the injury.
In anticipation of a possible lengthy layoff for their star player, the Oilers have recalled Ryan O'Marra and Colin McDonald from the AHL. Both will be in the lineup tonight when the Oilers host Dany Heatley and the San Jose Sharks in a much anticipated matchup.
Edmonton has been ravaged by injuries this season, wracking up a league leading 146 man games lost to injuries.
In 22 games this season, Hemsky has seven goals and 15 assists.
