Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Lightning claimed center Nate Thompson off waivers from the New York Islanders on Thursday.

Thompson, 25, appeared in 39 games with the Islanders this season and totaled a goal and five assists.

"We are extremely excited to bring Nate into the organization," said Tampa Bay general manager Brian Lawton. "We really feel the team will benefit greatly from his tenacity, physicality and energy as well as his overall ability. We're looking forward to seeing him contribute."

Over three years in the NHL, which included the first season with Boston and the past two with the Islanders, he has three goals and seven assists in 86 games.
