The Vancouver Canucks made a deal with the Phoenix Coyotes, trading veteran defenceman Mathieu Schneider for blue liner Sean Zimmerman and a 2010 conditional sixth-round draft selection.
The 40-year-old was an unrestricted free agent signing by the Canucks in August and in 17 games on the West Coast, the New York native has two goals and three assists.
Most recently, Schneider has played for the Canucks' minor league affiliate in Winnipeg following a dispute over playing time.
The well-traveled veteran of 20 NHL seasons, Schneider totaled 223 goals and 516 assists for 739 points in 1,281 games. His career includes stints with the Canucks, Thrashers, Canadiens, Ducks, Red Wings, Kings, Rangers, Maple Leafs and Islanders. He was a third-round pick by Montreal in 1987.
Zimmerman, 22, has collected two goals and five assists and 75 penalty minutes in 54 games with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL. The Denver, CO, native won a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2007 World Junior Championships.
The 6'3'', 205-pound defenceman was originally selected in the sixth round, 170th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
Vancouver also assigned defenceman Brad Lukowich to Manitoba on Wednesday. The 33-year-old has a goal and an assist in 13 games this season.
