Cybulski: It's time for Obama to watch the Capitals play

Barack Obama is taking to the mound to toss the ceremonial first pitch at the Washington Nationals season opener. It's great that the President is willing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of former US president William Howard Taft, who was the first to toss an opening day pitch in Washington back in 1910.

Since the ‘Celebrity President' took office, we've seen him fill out two NCAA March Madness brackets. He threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the 2009 MLB All-Star game in St Louis. He has even attended a Georgetown-Duke showdown, and went to a Washington Wizards game.

Yep, the team with all the guns.

Yet, for whatever reason, Obama has yet to take in a Washington Capitals game.

That's right. The best team in hockey.

The club with the most electrifying player in hockey, in Alex Ovechkin, and the one that plays just down the street from the White House.

It's certainly not for a lack of trying.

Captials owner Ted Leonsis has given the President an open invitation to attend a Capitals game at any time.

A website called Barack the Red has been launched in hopes of convincing the most powerful man in the free world to show up.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, who was forced to wear a Canada jersey during a media briefing a few weeks ago after losing a bet on the men's Olympic gold medal hockey game, was non-committal about when the President will attend if at all.

Hey, Mr. President, here's a crazy thought-- why not attend sometime in the next few weeks? How about sometime during the playoffs?

I'm not saying you need to shut down the US federal government, like our head honcho in Canada did during the Olympics in order to attend, but just check it out.

The Capitals deserve it. They've become a great success story, and you don't even need to travel for it.

Who knows? You might even like it.
