The New York Islanders have bought out the last season of Brendan Witt's two-year, $6 million contract.

The 35-year old defenceman now becomes an unrestricted free agent. He was placed on unconditional waivers by Islanders' GM Garth Snow on Friday and cleared them on Saturday.

Witt had two goals and three assists in 42 games with New York last year and had a plus/minus of -18. He was sent to AHL Bridgeport on Feb. 5 and played the last 27 games of the season there.

The native of Humboldt, Saskatchewan has played 14 NHL seasons with Washington, Nashville, and the Islanders. He has compiled 25 goals and 121 points in 890 career games.
