Maxim Afinogenov appears to be on his way to the Kontinental Hockey League, as Yahoo! Sports reports that SKA St. Petersburg is set to sign the Russian winger to a five-year contract.
According to writer Dmitry Chesnokov, KHL president Alexander Medvedev made the announcement on Friday.
Afinogenov, 30, played nine seasons with the Buffalo Sabres before signing a one-year contract with the Atlanta Thrashers last summer. He scored 24 goals and 61 points in 82 games last season and has tallied 158 goals and 395 points in 651 career NHL games.
Afinogenov is the third NHLer to head to SKA St. Petersburg this summer. Veteran netminder Evgeni Nabokov and defenceman Denis Grebeshkov also signed on with the KHL club over the last few weeks.
