The Washington Capitals have locked up a key part of their defence corps as Tom Poti has signed a two-year extension with the team worth $5.75 million.
Poti will earn $3 million in the first year of the contract and $2.75 million in the second. The extension will kick in following this season. Poti is in the final year of his old deal that will see him earn $3.5 million.
The 33-year old Poti had four goals and 24 assists in 70 games with the Caps last season. He added four assists in the Capitals first round playoff loss to the Canadiens.
Originally a third-round pick, 59th overall, by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, the Worchester, Massachusetts native has 67 goals and 251 assists in 787 games split between the Oilers, Islanders, Rangers and Capitals.
