Rangers assign Redden to AHL as teams fill waiver wire

The Wade Redden era in New York has come to an end.

The Rangers assigned the 33-year old defenceman to the Hartford Wolf Pack on Monday.

Redden, who signed a six-year, $39 million free-agent contract in July 2008, never panned out for the Rangers, posting five goals and 35 assists in 156 regular season games with the team.

Redden has $23 million and four years remaining on his contract.

The move will allow the Rangers to bury Redden's cap hit and give them some breathing room under the $59.4 million salary cap.

According to his agent, Don Meehan, Redden will report to Hartford on Wednesday.

The deadline for teams putting in a claim on a waived player is Monday, Noon ET. Should a player clear waivers, his team has the option of assigning him to its American Hockey League affiliate and freeing up salary.
