DETROIT -- Red Wings defenceman Jonathan Ericsson had back spasms and Ducks defenceman Andy Sutton broke his right thumb in Detroit's 4-0 season-opening win over the Ducks on Friday night.

The Ducks plan to evaluate Sutton on Saturday to determine how long he will be out.

Ericsson will miss at least one game, getting replaced by Jakub Kindl on Saturday night on the road against the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.

Sutton didn't play in the third period after getting in a fight with Detroit's Ruslan Salei midway through the second period.

Ericsson played for five-plus minutes in the first period and wasn't on the ice in the second or third. The Red Wings had hoped to give Ericsson's shaken confidence a boost by pairing him with six-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom.
