CALGARY -- The Calgary Flames have signed defenceman Mark Giordano to a five-year contract extension.

Terms of the contract were not released, however ESPN.com is reporting that Giordano will earn $4.02 million a season under the terms of the deal.

The six-foot, 203-pound defender from Toronto is in his fourth season with the Flames, who signed him as a free agent on July 6, 2004.

Giordano had career highs last season in games played (82), goals (11), assists (19) and points (30). He has three assists this season and is third in the NHL in blocked shots with 26.

His salary this season is US$1.075 million. Giordano was due to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
