Minnesota Wild defenceman Brent Burns has been handed a two-game suspension from the NHL for a butt-end that he delivered to the face of Panthers' forward Steve Bernier in the dying moments of Friday night's victory by Florida.

The 25-year old Burns received a game misconduct as the final buzzer sounded after he got his stick up in the face of Bernier, opening up a large gash.

While Burns claimed the butt-end was unintentional, Bernier suffered reported facial fractures that will require surgery on the play.

An native of Ajax, Ontario, Burns has five goals and four assists in 15 games this season.  He will forfeit $38,172.04 under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
