WASHINGTON -- The Washington Capitals signed Matt Hendricks to a US$1.6-million, two-year contract extension Wednesday.

Hendricks has seven goals, 12 assists and 84 penalty minutes in 57 games with the Capitals this season.

The 29-year-old forward signed a one-year deal with Washington in September after impressing the team during a training camp tryout.

Hendricks was drafted 131st overall by Nashville in the 2000 entry draft, but didn't make his NHL debut until 2008.

The six-foot, 215-pounder has 35 points (16-19) and 171 penalty minutes in 117 career NHL games with Washington and Colorado.
