The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired defeceman Chris Campoli and a conditional seventh round pick in 2011 from the Ottawa Senators for forward Ryan Potulny and conditional second round pick in 2011.

The trade is pending on a call to the NHL's head office.

The 26-year-old Campoli is playing out his sixth season in the NHL. Drafted by the New York Islanders in the seventh round (227th overall) in 2004, the Islanders traded Campoli, along with Mike Comrie, to the Senators for Dean McAmmond and a first-round draft pick in 2009.

Through 58 games this season, the North York, Ont., native has three goals and 11 assists with a minus-3 rating.

He wasn't surprised about being traded.

"I thought it was a good possibility, especially after seeing [Chris Phillips] sign last night," Campoli told TSN. "I spoke to my agent and he thought there was a good fit for me to be moved and once that happened you could see the writing on the wall."

Potulny, 26, is a third round draft pick (87th overall) of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2003. He was traded to the Edmonton Oilers for Danny Syvret in 2008, and then signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Blackhawks.

According to Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman, Campoli should be able to thrive in Chicago.

"I think the good news for Chris is that he's coming into a situation here where he's not going to be required to carry the load," Bowman said. "We've got a lot of guys that can play good minutes, so he needs to complement them, and I think in some ways, he's going to alleviate their load.

"I think his skill set and his experience is going to be a nice addition to our club. I think it's a definite upgrade."
