According to a recent Angus-Reid poll conducted for Maclean's magazine, more than 80% of Canadians believe that the sport of hockey would be better off if headshots were banned.
The online survey polled more than 1,000 Canadian adults between March 9-11, asking them to give their opinions on the state of the sport.
The results went on to show that 60 per cent of Canadians believe that professional hockey has become a more violent sport over the past five years, however amongst Canadians that consider themselves hockey fans, only 48 per cent believe that to be the case.
In addition 66 per cent of Canadians felt that the NHL was far too lenient on Boston Bruins' defenceman Zdeno Chara after he received no additional discipline for his hit on Max Pacioretty that left the Montreal Canadiens' forward with a concussion and a fractured vertebra.
Other poll findings included that approximately a third (34%) would consider encouraging their children to avoid playing hockey as well as watching fewer hockey games (34%) and refraining from buying products that sponsor professional hockey (29%).
