Boston had a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission, two goals by Patrice Bergeron and another from Michael Ryder, but it was all Lightning afterwards.
Back-to-back goals by Teddy Purcell and a goal by Sean Bergenheim in the second period lifted the Bolts into a tie, before Gagne's third period marker gave his club the first lead of the game.
Lightning netminder Dwayne Roloson was pulled in the first period in favour of Mike Smith.
The series is tied 2-2, with Game 5 set to go Monday night in Boston.
