The Montreal Canadiens have traded the rights to defenceman James Wisniewski to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2012.
The pick will become a fifth-rounder if Columbus actually signs him.
Columbus will have an exclusive window until Friday to negotiate a new contract with Wisniewski before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Wisniewski posted 10 goals and 41 assists in 75 games for Montreal last season. The 27-year-old native of Canton, Michigan just completed a one-year contract worth $3.25 million.
The six-year veteran blueliner was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round of the 2002 Draft, and has also played for Anaheim and the Islanders in addition to Montreal.
He was traded from the Islanders to the Canadiens on Dec. 28, 2010 in exchange for two draft picks.
