The Colorado Avalanche have signed defenceman Shane O'Brien to a one-year contract.

O'Brien appeared in 80 games for the Nashville Predators in 2010-11, scoring two goals and seven assists, adding 83 penalty minutes.  His 80 games matched his career high set in 2006-07.

“We are pleased to have Shane under contract,” said Avalanche General Manager and Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “He adds depth and brings an element to our defense.”

O'Brien has appeared in 379 career NHL games with Anaheim, Tampa Bay, Vancouver and Nashville.  He has scored 10 goals and 54 assists, with 688 penalty minutes in that span.

O'Brien was originally taken in the eighth round, 250th overall, of the 2003 Entry Draft.
