The New York Islanders have named Mark Streit as the 13th captain in the 40-year history of the franchise.

Streit takes over for Doug Weight, who retired at the end of last season after two years as captain.

"It's truly an honor to be named the captain of such a historic franchise with a rich history," said Streit in a statement. "To follow in the foot-steps of so many legendary leaders that represented the Islanders is a role I am excited to fill.

"It is a privilege to be considered one of the leaders of this team and I'm committed to taking this team to the next level."

Streit, 33, began his career with the Montreal Canadiens and signed a five-year deal with the Islanders as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2008-09 season.

The native of Bern, Switzerland missed all of last year with a left shoulder injury. He becomes the first Swiss-born captain in NHL history.

In 2009-10, Streit scored 11 goals and 38 assists and played all 82 games for New York.

"Throughout his three seasons with the Islanders, Mark has been a steadying presence in our dressing room," said general manager Garth Snow in a statement. "He is constantly pushing himself to be the very best and demands the same from his teammates. Mark is a leader both on and off the ice and we are pleased to name him the 13th team captain in Islanders history."
