BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Buffalo Sabres are attempting to reach an arrangement allowing forward Ales Kotalik to play in Europe this season.

Without going into specifics, general manager Darcy Regier would only say Thursday, "We're working on it.''

Playing in Europe became an option after Kotalik did not report to the Sabres' AHL affiliate in Rochester, N.Y., upon clearing waivers Monday.

He's a nine-year NHL veteran who was re-acquired by Buffalo in a trade with Calgary in June. The Czech Republic native expressed a desire to play in Europe rather than in the minors.

The Sabres waived Kotalik to get under the NHL salary cap. He's set to make US$3 million this season.

His agent, Larry Kelly, did not immediately return messages.
