Maple Leafs forward Clarke MacArthur has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and two regular season games for his hit on Justin Abdelkader of the Detroit Red Wings last night.

MacArthur met earlier today with NHL Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan to plead his case that he did not target the head of Abdelkader.

"Obviously I wasn't trying to target his head... I just grazed him and I think he was trying to draw a penalty," MacArthur said after last night's game. "It was just one of those plays [that] hopefully it shows it on the tape. But I was obviously going for his shoulder and trying to get out of the zone with the puck there."

Ultimately Shanahan deemed the check worthy of further discipline, making MacArthur the eighth NHL player currently suspended.

MacArthur was hopeful that he would be able to avoid a suspension and be in the lineup for the Maple Leafs when they open the season against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.

"They don't want that going on, [but] that was not my intention whatsoever so hopefully everything just works out," he said.

MacArthur, who will over $35,000 in salary, will miss the preseason rematch against Detroit tonight and regular season games against Montreal and Ottawa next week. He is eligible to return Oct. 15 against Calgary.
