The Boston Bruins and forward Shawn Thornton have agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $1.1 million a year.
Thornton was scheduled to become a free agent on July 1.
The 34-year-old Oshawa, Ontario, native has four goals and eight assists this season and leads the Bruins with 145 penalty minutes. He has led the team in that category in each of the last two seasons.
Thornton joined the Bruins in 2007-08 after playing one season for the Anaheim Ducks. Prior to that, he played parts of three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Thornton is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, winning with the Ducks in 2006-07 and Bruins last season.
