The Toronto Maple Leafs signed college free agent and Hamilton native Spencer Abbott on Wednesday.

Abbott will report to the Toronto Marlies on an amateur tryout contract for the balance of this season while his entry-level contract will begin next season.

The 23-year-old left winger scored 20 goals and 41 assists for the University of Maine Black Bears this season and was named Hockey East's player of the year.

Aboott played Jr. A for the Hamilton Red Wings before heading to Maine.
