Maple Leafs defenceman Carl Gunnarsson has been ruled out of Toronto's final two games of the season with a separated shoulder.

The blueliner is also expected to miss a chance to play for Sweden at next month's World Championship.

The 25-year-old suffered the injury on Tuesday in Buffalo when he was checked by Sabres forward Marcus Foligno. Gunnarson left the game and did not return.

Gunnarsson will be seen by doctors again on Wednesday. The first evaluation of the injury post-game suggested that no surgery would be required.

In his second season on Toronto's blue line, Gunnarsson appeared in 76 games and had four goals and 15 assists.
