It appears that Patrick Roy is still in the running for head coach of the Montreal Canadiens.

La Presse and TSN's sister station in Quebec RDS reported Friday that the former Montreal netminder - along with other candidates - will be having another discussion with the Canadiens' front office team soon to discuss the club's vacant position.

Roy has been widely believed to be in consideration to rejoin the franchise that he backstopped to their last two Stanley Cup victories, with his name coming up in discussions regarding their head coach and GM posts. He has spent the last seven seasons with the Quebec Remparts as co-owner, general manager and head coach and led the team to a Memorial Cup victory in 2006.

The club hired Marc Bergevin as general manager on May 2 and his first order of business was moving interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth back to his original post as assistant coach until the new head coach would decide if he would stay on board.

La Presse writer Philippe Cantin and RDS hockey reporter Renaud Lavoie report that Bergevin, contrary to earlier local reports, has not dismissed Roy as a candidate and that he, assistant GMs Rick Dudley and Larry Carriere and director of player development Scott Mellanby plan to meet with him very soon.

Other finalists for the job include former Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Michel Therrien and former NHL head coach Marc Crawford. Bob Hartley, who was also a candidate, joined the Calgary Flames as head coach on Thursday.

Files from La Presse and RDS were used for this report.
