Free agent defenceman Marc-Andre Gragnani is on his way to Carolina, as the 25-year-old unrestricted free agent agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the Hurricanes on Wednesday.

The deal will pay Gragnani $800,000 at the NHL level, and $105,000 if he plays in the American Hockey League.

"Marc-Andre was in the NHL all of last season, and will push for a job with us in the fall," said Hurricanes vice-president of hockey operations Ron Francis in a statement. "He has good size and has shown the ability to produce offensively both in the AHL and the NHL."

Gragnani will be joining his third team of 2012. He was traded from the Buffalo Sabres to the Vancouver Canucks at the Feb. 27 trade deadline as part of the Cody Hodgson deal.

In 73 NHL games with the Sabres and Canucks, Gragnani has three goals and 15 assists.

He was Buffalo's third-round pick in the 2005 NHL Draft.
