Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced Wednesday that forward Rene Bourque underwent surgery to repair an abdominal injury and will be sidelined for eight to 12 weeks.

The surgery was performed earlier Wednesday in Montreal.

Bourque, acquired from Calgary last season, suffered an abdominal wall tear during his off-season training in preparation for the season.

The 30-year-old scored five goals and eight points in 38 games with the Canadiens last season.
