ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenceman Cam Fowler to a five-year contract extension.

Financial terms of the deal were not released, but reports say it's worth US$20 million.

"We're excited to sign Cam to a long-term contract," general manager Bob Murray said. "He's a character kid with a great chance to become an elite NHL defenceman."

The 20-year-old had five goals and 24 assists with the Ducks last season, appearing in all 82 games. He also averaged 23 minutes 15 seconds of ice time per game.

Fowler was selected in the first round, 12th overall, in the 2010 NHL draft. The six-foot-one, 205-pound native of Windsor, Ont., had 40 points in 76 games in his rookie season of 2010-11.

Fowler and his family moved to the United States when he was young and he has played for the U.S. national team at the junior level.
