Flames place backups Karlsson, Irving on waivers

The Calgary Flames placed both of their potential backup goaltenders, Henrik Karlsson and Leland Irving on waivers on Thursday.

Both goaltenders are both now eligible to be claimed by any NHL team until Friday at Noon et.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, since the battle for the backup job could go either way, the Flames placed both netminders on waivers so either one could be demoted to the AHL if they clear.

The 29-year-old Karlsson posted a 1-4-2 record in nine games with the Flames last season, posting a 3.17 GAA and a .900 save percentage.

Irving, appeared in seven games with Calgary last season and was 1-3-3 with a 3.20 GAA with a .912 save percentage.

The following players were placed on waivers Thursday:

Ottawa - F Pat Cannone.

St. Louis - D Taylor Chorney.

Boston - F Jamie Tardif.

Colorado - F David Van Der Gulik.

Toronto - F Tim Connolly.

Vancouver - D Derek Joslin, F Andrew Gordon.

Carolina - F Tim Wallace.

Los Angeles - D Andrew Bodnarchuk.

Minnesota - F Nick Palmieri, F Jake Dowell, F Stephane Veilleux.

Montreal - F Mike Blunden, D Frederic St. Denis.

Calgary - F Paul Byron, D Brett Carson, G Leland Irving, G Henrik Karlsson.
