The Toronto Maple Leafs have sustained their first major injury of the abbreviated NHL season.

Head coach Randy Carlyle confirmed forward Joffrey Lupul suffered a fractured forearm in Wednesday night's win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In the second period, Lupul was hit in the right arm on a shot by Dion Phaneuf and immediately left the ice for the dressing room. He is out indefinitely.

Last weekend, Lupul signed a five-year, $26.25 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs through the 2017-18 season.

Last season, the 29-year-old scored 25 goals and added 42 assists for 67 points in 66 games.
