The match penalty assessed to St. Louis Blues forward David Backes in Friday night's loss to the Detroit Red Wings was rescinded by the NHL on Saturday.

Backes was penalized for an illegal hit to the head of Red Wings defenceman Kent Huskins in the third period.

However, replays showed that Backes did not make contact with the head of Huskins, who was crumpled by the hit and struggled to get back to the bench.

Pavel Datsyuk scored the winning goal for the Red Wings on the ensuing power play.

"It was a big turning point and it turned out being the turning point of the game," Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock said after the game.
