QMJHL: MacKinnon leaves game early with undisclosed injury

The Halifax Mooseheads 8-5 loss to the Moncton Wildcats on Friday was overshadowed by the loss of potential top NHL Draft pick Nate MacKinnon.

The Mooseheads' centre left the game in the second period with an undisclosed injury and did not return.

N.B., Dmitrij Jaskin scored three goals and added an assist and Yannick Veilleux had a goal and two assists as the Wildcats (34-17-1) beat Halifax (42-6-3) for their 10th win in their last 11 outings.

Meanwhile, Petr Straka moved into the top 10 in league scoring as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar downed the host Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 5-3 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

The 20-year-old forward set up two of his club's goals and now has 34 goals and 69 points in 42 games, which are career highs in both categories.

Carl Gelinas, Jeremy Gregoire, Alexandre Ranger, Maxim Lamarche and Valentin Zykov scored for the Drakkar (36-13-5), who moved one point ahead of the Rimouski Oceanic for first place in the East Division standings.

Zykov leads all rookies in scoring with 33 goals and 64 points in 53 contests

Billy Hartley had a goal and an assist for the Screaming Eagles (10-34-8), who are winless in five games, and Clark Bishop and Zachery Moody each scored once.

Baie-Comeau's Philippe Cadorette stopped 24-of-27 shots while David Honzik made 32 saves in a losing cause.

Baie-Comeau went 1 for 3 on the power play, and Cape Breton failed to score on three chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: P.E.I. 3, Rimouski 2; Saint John 6, Acadie-Bathurst 4; Victoriaville 5, Chicoutimi 0; Val-d'Or 4, Drummondville 3; Gatineau 2, Blainville-Boisbriand 1 (SO) and Shawinigan 2, Quebec 1 (OT).

At Sydney, N.S., Gregoire and Lamarche put the Drakkar ahead 2-0 midway through the first period before Moody and Bishop responded for the Screaming Eagles to make it a tied game after 20 minutes of play.

Zykov regained the lead for Baie-Comeau 1:44 into the second period and it stayed 3-2 until the third period when Ranger added another for the Drakkar.

Hartley made it a one-goal game at 10:54, however Gelinas scored into an empty net to secure the victory for the Drakkar.

At Charlottetown, Matej Beran scored the tying and game-winning goals midway through the third period as the Rocket (30-20-2) came from behind to beat Rimouski (35-12-6), which lost in regulation for the first time in 11 outings.

At Bathurst, N.B., Maxime Villemaire scored twice and set up one more, Pierre Durepos had four assists and Alex Fournier made 43 saves as Saint John (20-31-1) downed the Titan (21-28-6) to end its seven-game winless streak

At Victoriaville, Que., Brandon Whitney stopped all 27 shots he faced while Angelo Miceli and Philippe Halley each had a goal and an assist as the Tigres (22-22-8) blanked Chicoutimi (24-26-5), who are winless in six contests.

At Val-d'Or, Que., Cedrick Henley broke a 3-3 tie at 9:42 of the third period and Philippe Trudeau made 37 saves as the Foreurs (27-22-3) slipped past Drummondville (28-19-4), which lost for the first time in three outings.

Olympiques 2 Armada 1 (SO)

At Boisbriand, Que., Rock Regimbald and Tomas Hyka scored in the shootout and Robert Steeves turned away 27 shots as Gatineau (25-24-3) extended its win streak to four games by edging the Armada (31-14-7).

Cataractes 2 Remparts 1 (OT)

At Shawinigan, Que., Marvin Cupper stopped 40-of-41 shots and Frank Schumacher scored the winner nine seconds into overtime as the Cataractes (13-34-6) handed Quebec (29-19-4) its third loss in a row.
