Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn was fined $10,000 by the National Hockey League on Saturday for cross-checking Edmonton's Ryan Jones in a game on Thursday night.

The fine came after Benn had a hearing with NHL Director of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan. The amount Benn will pay is the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

On the play in question, Benn cross-checked Jones from behind after Jones had run into Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen.

Jones, who was assessed a goaltender interference penalty on the play, remained down before being helped to the locker room. Benn was given a major penalty and a game misconduct.

Benn has six goals and eight assists in 16 games this season.
