The Winnipeg Jets are making a pitch to host the NHL Heritage Classic in 2016.

When the team arrived in New Jersey for Sunday's game against the Devils, True North chairman Mark Chipman confirmed reports that the team is in preliminary negotiations with NHL to host an outdoor game.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, a source says the league is hoping to play a Heritage Classic in Canada in 2014 and 2016, with Vancouver's B.C. Place Stadium the likely location in 2014.

The new Investors Group Field in Winnipeg could seat about 40,000 for hockey.

The Edmonton Oilers hosted the first Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium in 2003 and the Calgary Flames played an outdoor game at McMahon Stadium in 2011.
