A Little Bit of Everything
What might be on the Leafs' shopping list in the next two weeks?
Well, if you believe the NHL on TSN panel, it'll be a bit of everything. Aaron Ward believes the Leafs need a veteran goaltender with game-stealing ability.
However, when floated with the idea of acquiring a goaltender such as Vancouver's Roberto Luongo, Bob McKenzie pointed out that acquiring him may be a tough ask.
“I suspect – when it's all said and done - that Dave Nonis and the Toronto Maple Leafs will find the price too high for somebody [like Luongo],” said McKenzie.
Craig Button, for his part, suggested that the Leafs should take a close look at San Jose defenceman Dan Boyle.
Coast to Coast?
Speaking of Boyle, his name persists as one of the hottest available deadline targets and ESPN's Katie Strang believes the Rangers have definite interest in the 36-year-old blueliner.
Strang notes that Marian Gaborik would be a good fit for the Sharks in return, but that his $7.5-million cap hit makes him a difficult addition for a lot of teams.
Another hindrance to a possible Boyle-to-the-Rangers scenario is the possibility that Boyle's list of possible trade destinations may not even include the Rangers.
Roy's Your Boy
While rumours surround Dallas centre Derek Roy and the possibility of him getting dealt for a second time within the span of a year before Apr. 3, the 29-year-old is taking the rumours in stride.
“I understand the situation, and you never know what can happen, so I just concentrate on my game,” Roy told the Dallas Morning News. “It's fine, honestly. I just try to work on my game, and everything will figure itself out.
And Now for Something Completely Different
NHL GMs have a feeling this trade deadline's market will be tough to gauge.
"Everything is compressed, so will the flurry be compressed?” Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli mused to NHL.com. “Will there be a flurry? I don't know. It's been so different because everyone is in it and everyone is looking to add. There are a few teams that aren't looking to add, but I would say most of them are still in the race."
The playoff races remain tight in both conferences with seven points separating sixth place from 14th in the Eastern Conference and a mere six points separating fifth place from 13th in the West.
