With the NHL Trade Deadline now less than a week away, teams are making decisions on whether to buy or sell. Check out Thursday's trade rumours and speculation from around the NHL beat, and follow TSN.ca each day until Deadline Day for all the updates.

Whitney Available

The TSN Hockey Insiders discuss the Ryan Whitney trade rumours, noting that the Oilers are looking to move the veteran defenceman but a deal with Boston hadn't been completed as of Wednesday.

The Insiders also address Miikka Kiprusoff rumours and say that if the conditions are right, the veteran netminder could still be moved.

Won't Be Forced

Vancouver Canucks fans waiting anxiously for a deal to end the team's years-long goaltending battle may be in for a longer than even they could have anticipated.

Speaking to the Vancouver Sun, Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman said that the team remains in no hurry to deal either Roberto Luongo or Cory Schneider for short-term gains.

"Goaltending is a bellwether position in the National Hockey League," Gilman told The Sun. "You can't win without it. It's like pitching in baseball. In the [trade] discussions we're having with other teams, they're asking about our goaltenders."

Sun reporter Iain MacIntyre outlined how an earlier deal between the Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs fell apart when the Leafs refused to part with Nazem Kadri. The other prime piece on the table in the deal was centre Tyler Bozak, who - now halfway through the final year of his contract - has shifted into rental player territory.

Shopping List

Speaking of the Leafs, the team would like to add before the trade deadline but is not close on anything as per GM Dave Nonis.

While he didn't reveal his list specifically, the Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons writes "it's apparent from asking around that he has some interest in a veteran goalie who may not be Roberto Luongo, probably someone closer to Nikolai Khabibulin; a depth centre, who can fill in on various lines if need be; and a top-4 defenceman who would take some of the time and pressure off Dion Phaneuf."

Smith's Situation

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun noted in his bloga that Mike Smith's situation in Phoenix is worth monitoring.

Smith, due to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, has had talks with the Coyotes but could wait to see how Phoenix's ownership situation pans out before agreeing to a deal.
