New Jersey Devils prospect Stefan Matteau has officially been released by Blainville-Boisbrand of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The release comes two days after a loss 2-1 loss to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the QMJHL playoffs.

The 19-year-old, the Devils' first-round pick last June, was reportedly benched by head coach Jean-Francois Houle after taking a slashing penalty during the game.

Rather than travel back from Baie-Comeau with the club, Matteau reportedly traveled back with a bus-load of fans.

It's not clear if Matteau quit the team or was asked to leave.

"I support the junior team doing what is right," Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello told the Star-Ledger. "It's my understanding he will not be going back."

Matteau played in 17 games with the Devils this season, posting one goal and two assists.

Matteau's father and former NHLer Stephane Matteau is an assistant coach with the Armada.
