Round one of TSN.ca's 2013 Play of the Year Showdown pushes on with a couple of incredible, hard-fought plays by two talented players. Shawn Matthias of the Florida Panthers goes head-to-head against Detroit Red Wings veteran and star player, Henrik Zetterberg. You can call this POY match-up the battle of the 'never say quit' plays.
Shawn Matthias nets his POY candidate on the penalty kill as he out-hustles, out-works and out-plays Bruins rookie defenseman Dougie Hamilton. Not only does Matthias showcase some incredible strength on this play, he brings it all together with some slick hands and finishes the play off in style for the short-handed goal.

Henrik Zetterberg's POY entry is strikingly similar to Matthias' play. Zetterberg gives everything is has in a race for the puck, taking a hit from T.J. Oshie, the two continue to battle for the puck on the ground as the two slide towards the net. The end result of this incredible effort by Zetterberg is a short-handed goal, which just so happens to be his third goal of the night.

Player facts:

- Matthias played for Canada at the 2008 World Juniors in Ottawa, where he and his teammates captured the gold medal on home soil
- For a player that was drafted 210th overall, Zetterberg has certainly represented himself well. He has five international hockey medals, led the Red Wings in scoring during the 2007-08 season, and led the NHL in game-winning goals in 2006-07

Fun facts:

- In the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Matthias was actually selected 47th overall by the Detroit Red Wings
- Zetterberg has many nicknames, but by far the most interesting was given to him by teammate Pavel Datsyuk, who refers to Zetterberg as 'Zetty the Grizzly Teddy'. Zetterberg also appeared as 'Henrik Berg' (which was based greatly on his real-life persona) in a Swedish novel
