The Carolina Hurricanes have signed forward Jared Staal to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal will pay the 22-year-old $550,000 on the NHL level or $60,000 on the American Hockey League level during the 2013-14 season.

Staal played in two games with the Hurricanes this past season. He made his debut on April 25 against the New York Rangers, starting the game on the same line with his two older brothers, Eric and Jordan. It marked the fourth time in NHL history that a trio of brothers played for the same team during the same season, and the first since Peter, Anton and Marian Stastny did so for Quebec in 1985.

The Thunder Bay, Ont., native had career highs in goals and assists playing with the AHL's Charlotte Checkers last season. He has totaled eight goals and 10 assists in 119 career AHL games with San Antonio, Providence and Charlotte.

Selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the second round, 49th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Staal was acquired by the Hurricanes on May 13, 2010, in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
