The St. Louis Blues promoted general manager Doug Armstrong to president of hockey operations on Wednesday and the long-time NHL executive said that the team is still working on getting defenceman Alex Pietrangelo signed to a contract.

"We've been clear on what we think of Alex as a person and as a player, that we want him here for the long term," he said through the club's website on Wednesday. "We've made adjustments to our roster to ensure that we can keep him here. Alex is going to be a St. Louis Blue."

Pietrangelo, 23, is a restricted free agent coming out of his entry-level contract. In 224 career NHL games with the Blues, Toronto-area native has 29 goals and 121 points.

While Pietrangelo had no arbitration rights, the team does not plan to trade him away or lose him through a possible offer sheet.

"We've made it very clear since the summer," Armstrong added. "Alex will be a St. Louis Blue when he plays hockey again."

Pietrangelo already said he's not planning on holding out with the team, either.

"I'm not even thinking about holding out," Pietrangelo told The Canadian Press last week. "I'm thinking about training camp and being there September 11, 12, whenever we're going to start up, and be ready for the first game of the season."
