The Edmonton Oilers have named defenceman Andrew Ference as the team's new captain.

He becomes the 14th team captain in franchise history.

The 34-year-old Ference was signed as an unrestricted free agent this past off-season to a four-year, $13 million contract.

Dallas Eakins broke the news via Twitter, writing "Andrew Ference will UNITE us. 14th Captain in Edmonton Oiler History" above a photo of Ference holding up his sweater with a "C" on its shoulder alongside a smiling Oilers staff.

An Edmonton native, Ference has 760 career NHL games on his resume with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins, scoring 37 goals and 156 assists with 645 penalty minutes.

Ference won the 2011 Stanley Cup while a member of the Bruins.

The Oilers captaincy became vacant this summer when the team dealt forward Shawn Horcoff to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Philip Larsen and a seventh-round draft pick. Horcoff had been the Oilers captain since 2010.
