Kevin Westgarth of the Carolina Hurricanes will have a telephone hearing on Tuesday with the NHL's Department of Player Safety for his hit on Mark Borowiecki of the Ottawa Senators.

The hit occurred in the first period of Carolina's 4-1 victory over the Senators on Sunday. Westgarth received a boarding minor just under eight minutes into the game after hitting Borowiecki from behind as the Senators defenceman was trying to regain his footing from an earlier fall. Borowiecki did not return to the game.

The Hurricanes forward has never been suspended before in 129 career NHL games. Westgarth has no points in eight games this season.

Under terms of the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement, a telephone hearing means that any suspension would have to be less than five games.
