The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed unrestricted free agent defenceman Calle Johansson for the remainder of the season.
The 37 year old was with the Washington Captials last season, scoring three goals and 15 points in a career high 82 games. He will not be in the lineup Tuesday night.
"I'm not doing this for any other reason than winning the Cup,'' he told reporters after skating with the Leafs at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday.
"I played about twice a week this year but I need to get into game shape.''
Johansson is the latest defenseman to join the Maple Leafs blue line corps. Drake Berehowsky was acquired in early February and star Brian Leetch was picked up last week while Ken Klee was signed as a free agent last summer.
Johansson is Washington's all-time leader among defencemen in assists (410) and points (529).
Johansson represented Sweden at the 1998 Olympics playing four games. He also played for Sweden at the 1996 World Cup collecting six points in four games played. For his efforts he was named to the World Cup All-Star Team leading the Swedish entry to a third place finish.
The native of Goteborg, Sweden has played 1,101 career games for Buffalo and Washington collecting 529 points (119 goals, 410 assists) with 519 penalty minutes. He was originally Buffalo's first choice, 14th overall in the 1985 Entry Draft.
