Ducks defenceman James Wisniewski left the ice on a stretcher and was taken to a hospital during  Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinal Tuesday night.

Wisniewski had been defending in front of the Anaheim net when Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom skated by and delivered an elbow to the head with 6:11 to play in the second period.

Seconds earlier, Wisniewski was hit by a slap shot in the rib area.

When play stopped, Wisniewski remained on the ice on his hands and knees. After several minutes he was helped onto a stretcher. He was then taken to UC Irvine Medical Center for precautionary reasons.

Following the game, the Ducks said that Wisniewski had been diagnosed with a lung contusion and that he'd remain in hospital overnight as a precautionary measure.
