Oilers ink Strudwick to one-year deal

The Edmonton Oilers stayed busy on Wednesday, keeping defenceman Jason Strudwick with a one-year, $700,000 contract.

The 33-year old played 71 games with the Oilers last season, registering a career-high nine points and 60 penalty minutes.

"We were very impressed by Jason's all around abilities last season and more importantly the leadership role he played," Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini said in a release.  "Both Jason and his wife Schoena have been great additions to our organization and our city."

Earlier in the day, the Oilers added goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin with a four-year, $15 million contract.

The 6'3", 230 pound blueliner has played 559 career NHL games, collecting 47 points, while making stops in New York (Islanders), Vancouver, Chicago, New York (Rangers) and Edmonton.

Drafted by the Islanders in the third round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Strudwick turned pro after a successful junior career, which saw him win back-to-back Memorial Cup championships with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League in 1993-94 and 1994-95.
