Edmonton left wing Liam Reddox was knocked out of the Oilers' 3-1 loss at Buffalo when he was rammed headfirst into the boards by Clarke MacArthur late in the third period.

Reddox went after a loose puck along the left boards in the Oilers end when MacArthur leaned into him. Reddox slammed into the boards after appearing to lose balance on his way down.

He was on the ice for a couple minutes, and was helped off after a five-minute delay. He needed assistance heading into the Edmonton locker room.

Edmonton coach Pat Quinn said Reddox will need X-rays on a swollen wrist, and that he also sustained a cut on his face.

"Watching it on tape, (MacArthur) knew exactly what he was doing. I don't have anything to say on it. His head got smacked, and he took a pretty nasty hit," Quinn said.

MacArthur drew a five-minute major boarding penalty and a game misconduct. While Reddox was on the ice MacArthur showed concern, and placed his hand on Reddox's arm.

"It's really just a hockey play," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "Clarke was just leaning on him trying to get position and his legs got tangled up. It's a tough call. I understand why they called it because of how he went in, but there was no intent, there was no running."

Reddox was playing in just his third game of the season.
