Russian newspaper SovSports is reporting that unrestricted free agent Alexander Frolov is on the verge of signing with the New York Rangers; however TSN has learned that while the two-sides are in discussion, no deal has been finalized.

The report has a quote from Frolov's agent, Sergei Isakov stating that Frolov is about to sign a one-year contract with the Rangers, similar to the deal that Maxim Afinogenov (another one of Isakov's clients) had with the Atlanta Thrashers last season.  Afinogenov had a career season in Atlanta after he signed a one-year deal with the Thrashers worth $800,000.  He has yet to reap the rewards as he remains unsigned.

In the report Isakov also criticizes how the Los Angeles Kings treated his client last year, stating that they "spoiled" his season.  The enigmatic, sometimes sniper was openly criticized by Kings' head coach Terry Murray last season for what he called "unacceptable play" and lack of drive.  Murray dropped the 28-year old Russian from the first to third line last season and made him a healthy scratch at one point.  According to the report, Isakov says that this criticism cost his client millions of dollars.

Frolov struggled mightily last year, scoring only 19 goals, the lowest total since his rookie season and adding 32 assists.  Although there has been plenty of speculation that Frolov could return to Russia to play in the KHL, Isakov stated that his client will play at least one more season in the NHL before deciding his future.
